2009 November 17 Ploughed UpNo one likes change. Seriously, they don't. If Facebook changes their format or home screen, people join a group to "Change Facebook back to what it was", complaing for weeks on end. It's funny. We hate change, yet without, we would die. How horrible would life be if we never grew stronger, wiser, or older? The last thing we want to think about is handing ourselves over to Christ to change our lives. So many teenagers are too busy or preoccupied with themselves to think about this, this ultimate change. And left to ourselves, we cannot change the way we want to. People constantly try to change themselves, but it never satisfies or sticks. CS Lewis (author of The Chronicles of Narnia) wrote: The terrible thing, the almost impossible thing, is to hand your whole self - all your wishes and precautions - to Christ. But it is far easier that what we are trying to do instead. For what we are trying to do is to remain what we call "ourselves", to keep personal happiness as our great aim in life, and yet at the same time be "good". We are all trying to let our mind and heart go their own way - centered on money or pleasure or ambition - and hoping, in spite of this, to behave honestly and chastely and humbly. And that is exactly what Christ warned us you could not do. As He said, a thorn cannot produce figs. If am a field that contains nothing but grass seed, I cannot produce wheat. Cutting the grass may keep it short; but I shall still produce grass and no wheat. If I want to produce wheat, the change must go deeper than the surface. I must be ploughed up and resown. The human race is rebellious towards God. We are like spiritual amnesiacs who have forgotten where we have come from, who we are, and where we're going. Much like grass seed that wishes we could produce wheat, left to ourselves, the human race cannot produce the change it wants to produce. But then, there is Christ. Christ can produce the change you want in life, but it might not be what you expect. God is loving, kind, and even dangerous...but he's good. Give your life to Christ today and find the real change, the spiritual change, the lasting change, you've been searching for.
